President's Message

The word "voters" in our name makes everyone associate us with elections. It's not too early to start preparing for Election 2002.

We need a voter service chair to decide how we will deal with the election and to get commitments for help from other Leaguers before they commit to other causes. Among the projects we have undertaken in the past are candidate forums, voters guides, "Ad Watch" and voter registration.

Ad Watch in 1994 was a lot of fun as well as hard work. We closely examined television and print ads for a particular race. Member participation was high and our meetings were sometimes noisy, sometimes heated and never dull. Television Channel 9 broadcast our findings every week. If we are to do another Ad Watch, it's advisable to start making media contacts soon. Please call the office if you're interested.

Every seat in the City Council and State Legislature will be up for election in 2002 because voting districts will be redrawn in accordance with the Census. The state commission has been appointed and had its first meeting on May 11. The City Charter provides that the Council Chair appoint the city commission and that the reapportionment plan be completed by Jan 2, 2002. Jon Yoshimura's spokesman says he plans to appoint the commission in July. We need a chair for the committee which will monitor the commission. Please call the office if you're interested.
