Bringing Out the Voters in 2002
Throughout the past year, pundits and activists have been lamenting the failures of the voting process in Florida and beyond. According to a recent Caltech/MIT study, procedural mistakes lost an estimated 4 to 6 million votes nationwide in 2002. Even more distressing, but not as often discussed, is the fact that half of the nation -- over 100 million citizens -- simply chose not to go to the polls at all. In our own state of Hawaii, less than 50% of the voting-age population turned out to vote, placing us 48th in the nation.
Clearly we have an extraordinary challenge in promoting political participation in the coming year. But we also have a number of excellent opportunities. The events of September 11th provide an opportunity to tap into citizens' renewed interest in government and policymaking. The 2002 elections promise to provide a lively campaign season in which Hawaii citizens can take part. With so many seats up for election -- Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Honolulu Mayor and City Council, the entire State House and Senate -- 2002 will be a real test for both candidates and voters.
The League of Women Voters is launching an important effort to engage, educate, and inspire citizens to cast an informed vote in 2002 -- and we need your help. We invite all Leaguers to volunteer to help brainstorm, research, plan, and carry out initiatives for voter registration and education throughout the coming year. Potential projects include candidate forums, media efforts, internet-based voter guides, and "get-out-the-vote" sign-waving. Through these projects, we aim to engage citizens in the democratic process, bring them back to the polling booth, and provide them with the tools they need to cast an informed vote.
With voter participation on the decline for decades, we have our work cut out for us. But together we can make a real difference in 2002. Please volunteer today -contact Nikki Love at 375-0679 or email@example.com.
