ACTION ALERT: Campaign Finance Reform
The League has long supported and encouraged efforts to give Hawaii voters the opportunity to try an excellent new method of funding election campaigns: public funding, sometimes called "Clean Elections".
This option is valuable because it levels the field so it is easier for candidates with community support to run for office, the candidate can focus on issues rather than fund-raising, campaign costs decrease over time, ties to special interest groups are cut, and most importantly, more people vote as trust in the political system is restored.
This session, an important opportunity is at hand. We need letters now to show community support.
House Bill H13 1547 and Senate Bill SB1451 propose to offer the public funding option to candidates running in state House races, whenever sufficient funds exist in the Hawaii Election Campaign Fund (the money comes from taxpayers who use the $2 check-off option on their state tax forms). Your support is crucial because it represents public interest in this option.
Please send, or fax, letters in support to:
All letters can be the same. Be sure to send HB1547 to Reps. Hamakawa and Takamine; and SB1451 to Sen. Hanabusa, Kawamoto, and Tanaguchi. House fax: 586-6501 Senate fax: 586-6659 Mailing address: Legislator's name, 415 South Beretania St., Honolulu, HI 96813
This is our best opportunity in years. Mahalo for your support. You can get more information at www.hiclean.org.
