CALL TO ACTION
CURB GLOBAL WARMING FROM NATIONAL LWV
Today, the impact of global warming can be felt around the United States and the world. In recent years, the US has seen both severe drought and deadly flooding. In the future, global warming could result in declining lake levels in the Great Lakes region, more frequent and intense droughts in areas of the Great Plains, and more numerous storm surges in the Northeast. Action needs to be taken now to curb global warming. Senators John McCain (R AZ) and Joe Lieberman (D CT) have proposed an amendment to the Energy Policy Act (S. 14) that will begin to address global warming. Act today to support the McCain-Lieberman amendment to combat global warming!
Unfortunately, the current version of the energy bill allows for an increase in heat-trapping greenhouse gas. The McCain-Lieberman bipartisan amendment to the energy bill provides an important first step in the effort to curtail global warming. The amendment calls for a decrease in US greenhouse gas emissions to year 2000 levels by 2010 and year 1990 levels by 2016.
Action on the Senate energy bill (S. 14) is anticipated the week of July 28. Contact our Senators today and urge them to support the McCain-Lieberman greenhouse gas amendment. Please, act now!
