Planning Conference on September 25

LOOKING BACK, LOOKING FORWARD: Planning for the New Century

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at UH-Manoa cordially invites you to a conference marking its 30th anniversary. This conference will reflect upon the most extensive participatory planning initiative in Hawaii's history, the "Hawaii 2000" project launched in 1972 by the Governor's Office to engage the public in planning for the year 2000.

Now that we are into the new millennium, we draw from the past to look forward to the future as we ask: What was the vision in the 1960s and how much of it was realized? What can we learn from that experience so we can plan responsibly and effectively for the future? What are the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead as we look towards the next 30 years?

Please join us for a stimulating day of speakers, videos and sharing of ideas. Our special guest is Jaime Lerner, a renowned architect, planner and former Governor of the state of Parana, Brazil, who intensified social measures that place Curitaba among the capitals of the world with the highest quality of life.
