Pay Attention to Rail Bills

It looks like something will happen this year on rail transit. Over 10 years ago, League fought hard against that rail plan. It would have put elevated rails in downtown Honolulu because (surprise!) water was found where a subway was planned. No details have yet emerged for downtown this time, but it seems unlikely that the water has disappeared.

Oahus traffic congestion is the reason for the push for rail. Yet, when proponents are confronted with the fact that rail transit will have only a minuscule effect on traffic, they say traffic is not the reason for rail. They say we must have an alternative to be a world class city. But would taxpayers be will to pay a few billion dollars to be a world class city?

League must take a stand this time. If not this year, then soon. Our Transportation committee, chaired by Charles Carole, will take up the question soon. If you are interested, call Charles at 531-2503 or call the office, 531-7448.
