President's Message

Committees, committees, committees! What would League do without them? Pretty much everything we do starts with or is referred to one committee or another. Right now we have nine standing committees. Our ambition is to have at least three members on every committee (that way, it is safe to volunteer and not worry about being made Chair).

Here are our committees, their chairs and number of members, and a brief description of what they do. They all welcome new voices and thoughts.

Membership: Teresa Lau (3) Recruits new members and supports continuing members.

Planning & Zoning: Pearl Johnson (5) Follows Honolulu planning issues, testifies before Council as needed (see Kakaako Development).

Affordable Shelter: Jackie Parnell (4) Looks for solutions to problems of houselessness due to lack of affordable rentals (see Affordable Shelter).

Council Watch: Piilani Kaopuiki / Evangeline Funk (2) Follows Council activities, currently focusing on Charter Commission. Could become very interesting this year.

Voter Service: Arlene Ellis (committee size ranges from 1 in odd years to 20+ in election years). Registers voters, prepares election guides, arranges for public debates or forums. This is what League is all about!

Transportation: Charles Carole (1) Follows City transportation issues, prepares testimony. Needs more members!

Aloha Voter: Pearl Johnson (3) Puts together the Aloha Voter each month, is always looking for new material! Got something to say? Tell Pearl.

Budget & Finance: Roxie Berlin (3) Prepares the annual budget, watchdogs savings and expenditures.

Vote Count: Arlene Ellis (every able-bodied League member) You know what this group does – raises money for all our other projects while providing a valuable community service. If you haven't participated in one yet, be sure not to miss the next one.

Here's what we do. If you want to play, please join us. Check the Calendar on page 4 for upcoming meetings and attend. If there is something you think we should be doing and aren't, come to a Board meeting, 11 AM, first Thursday of the month, League Office. We can always create a new committee.

Aloha,
Jackie Parnell
