City Council Dislikes Sunshine Law
The Honolulu City Council is trying to exempt itself from the Sunshine Law. The Planning and Intergovernmental Affairs committee met on Oct. 25 and passed a resolution proposing to make the Sunshine Law inapplicable to each city council
Since the Sunshine Law is a state law (from which the state legislature exempted itself), the legislature would have to approve the idea as well.
Council members complain that the state Office of Information Practices interprets the law too strictly. If exempted from the state law, the Council would make its own rules on open meetings.
