Council Vote on Salt Lake Route
The recent City Council vote to choose Salt Lake instead of the airport for the route of the proposed rail transit system has been the subject of considerable controversy. I view it as cause for hope in the League's mission to keep rail from plunging the city into a fiscal black hole.
Before the Council voted for the Salt Lake route, it actually defeated, by a 5 to 4 vote, 3 other proposed routes. Only by putting the route through Romy Cachola's district could transit get the necessary majority. Cachola then changed his vote from against to for.
This illustrates the tenuousness of support for rail in the City Council. I made this point on Jay Fidell's Think Tech Hawaii on March 7 on KIPO FM 89.3.
