Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade

The 21st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., parade demonstrated something many of us have known for a long time: the Honolulu League is on a roll. Our thanks to all the League members who walked, rode or rollerbladed from Ala Moana Beach Park to Kapiolani Park on Monday, January 19. The marchers proudly carried our banner, greeted on-lookers and passed out sweets to children watching in awe. Evangeline Funk waved regally from the back of a sleek, black convertible and several members cruised with us on roller blades. It was a lot of fun!

We hope to make this an annual event. We've already begun planning for next year, so please mark Monday, January 18, 2010 on your calendar. Events such as these are excellent ways to increase our visibility--and did I say they are a lot of fun? We're considering ways to make next year even better--more convertibles, boater hats, a picnic or luncheon afterwards, more skaters, and a coronet for Evangeline have all been suggested. If you have any ideas, no matter how outlandish, please submit them to Ann Shaver at
