In Memoriam [Jerry Hess]
Longtime Honolulu League member Jerry Hess died in Colorado on March 19, 2009. Jerry had been an active league member in New York and California before moving to Hawaii. She joined the Honolulu League in 1974 and wasted no time before becoming involved. She served as vice president of the state League from 1975 to 1977 and as state League president from 1977 to 1979. From 1980 to 1982 she was vice president of the Honolulu League.
Her league activities were many and varied, including legislative coordinator, voter service, and nominating committees. She served on the State Elections Advisory Committee. She served as a member and chairperson of Honolulu’s Zoning Board of Appeals from 1975 through 1981.
Jerry was a remarkable woman who knew that public policy issues should be watched and understood by every voter, and she never gave up on that idea. She had a marvelous sense of humor and was always fun to work with. Although Jerry left Hawaii in 1993, she had great aloha for the League in Hawaii and kept her membership here until her death.
