Stalwart Members Celebrated
Nine stalwart League members were recognized for their service to the community on June 13, 2009, by the League of Women Voters of Honolulu. Together Jean Aoki, Arlene Ellis, Evangeline Funk, Grace Furukawa, Helen Griffin, Anna Hoover, Jackie Parnell, Mary Anne Raywid and Carol Whitesell have been members of League for over 273 years. Collectively they have served in every officer position and they have edited both Honolulu and State League newsletters.
Their time with League has been challenging as advocates for good government. They have worked continuously and tirelessly on issues in the public interest. The stories shared at the gathering indicated the honorees also had fun during their time. We are indeed fortunate that most will be continuing with the League and will certainly be available as important resources. It was evident that those of us who were there to do honor felt pride in the presence of such League luminaries. Anna Hoover and Arlene Ellis were unable to attend the luncheon.
The Hawaii State Legislature presented a certificate to each of our honorees. They were commended for outstanding volunteer service to help improve our community through the League of Women Voters of Honolulu.
Bernice Hayashida and Anne Marie Duca were unable to attend. They sent good wishes and mahalo to the honorees for all the work they have done, and continue to do, to make Hawaii a better place.
