Second Monson Award Celebration At Elks Club November 20
On Friday, November 20, the League of Women Voters of Honolulu Education Fund will present the Annual Donald & Astrid Monson Community Action Award of $5,000 to Donna Wong, Executive Director of Hawaii’s Thousand Friends, for her outstanding community service to protect Hawaii’s fragile environment.
The Honolulu League will host the reception and ceremony at the Honolulu Elks Club in Waikiki from 5 to 8 p.m. Reservations are $50 per person and will include hearty pupus, one cocktail, live music, and valet parking. Elizabeth Reilly has volunteered to chair the event, and she would happily welcome volunteers to assist her.
The Donald & Astrid Monson Community Action Fund award is given annually to an organization or individual who has “made the year’s outstanding contributions toward or involving public interest planning, housing, or environmental issues.” The first annual award was presented to the Sierra Club’s Jeff Mikulina last November.
This year’s award goes to Donna Wong, who has devoted over thirty years to protecting Hawaii’s environmental and cultural resources. She also co-founded the Aloha Aina Congress, a group of people fighting to preserve the land and waters of our state. Wong received the 2009 Women’s History Month award saluting women leaders in Hawaii last March at Washington Place.
“The League is proud to honor this courageous, hard-working woman who has volunteered much of her life to protecting our aina by presenting her with the second Donald & Astrid Monson Community Action Award,” said Piilani Kaopuiki, President of the League of Women Voters of Honolulu.
