Annual Monson Community Action Award Reception
It was a wonderful way to end the first decade of the new millennium and a great way to begin the holiday season--with a penthouse view of the Honolulu city lights, cold cocktails and hot pupus, live jazz music, a worthy honoree, and heartfelt tributes to the generosity of Astrid and Donald Monson.
On November 20, 2009, the Honolulu League held the second annual Astrid & Donald Monson Community Award Reception at the Plaza Club. A crowd of more than 70 guests from O’ahu, Big Island and Kauai, including local dignitaries, attended the reception to honor Donna Wong, the recipient of the 2009 Astrid & Donald Monson Community Action Award.
The award is given annually to an organization or individual who has made the year’s outstanding contributions toward or involving public interest planning, housing or environmental issues. After Sue Miller spoke of Astrid and Donald Monson’s professional achievements and contributions to the League of Women Voters of Honolulu, Helen Griffin, representing the LWV- Honolulu Education Fund board, presented Donna Wong, with a monkey pod bowl and a check for $5,000.
Piilani Kaopuiki introduced Donna who is the Executive Director of Hawaii’s Thousand Friends and spoke of her lifelong endeavors to preserve and protect Hawaii’s land, water, and cultural resources. Ms. Kaopuiki noted that Ms. Wong had also received the Hawaii State Commission on Status of Women’s highest award as the Women’s History Month honoree during a Washington Place reception attended by Governor Lingle.
A personal tribute to Ms. Wong was given by Mr. Scott Foster, who described the time and energy she invested in mentoring numerous community and environmental grass root organizers. The gracious acceptance speech by Donna Wong also included remembrances of Astrid as her mentor.
Elizabeth Reilly, organizer of this year’s reception, announced that the League of Women Voters of Honolulu Education Fund would fund the updating of “A Citizen’s Guide to the Sustainable Plans” in partnership with Hawaii’s Thousand Friends. The first Guide was a special project that Astrid had personally worked on more than 20 years ago.
It was a fitting announcement to end the program and honor Astrid & Donald’s generous gifts to Ms. Wong and the League. At the courtesy of Scott Foster you can view event photos here.
Special Announcement and Call for Volunteers: The League is seeking dedicated volunteers to help plan the 2010 Astrid & Donald Monson Community Award Reception. If you are interested in participating please call Elizabeth Reilly at 864-8081 by February 10th to ensure you are invited to the first planning luncheon tentatively planned for February 23rd.
