Local Agenda Item

In line with the consensus of the membership, the League Board proposes no change in the Local Agenda Item for 1957-58.

Achieving a new and adequate charter for the City and County of Honolulu. Continuing Responsibilities:

  1. Securing a new city county jail which meets the standards of a modern correctional institution providing adequate security, segregation, and rehabilitation.

  2. Replacement of the Coroner's Office of the City and County of Honolulu with a medico-legal investigative system.

The following topics were suggested by members as possible items for the 1957-58 local agenda. After discussion in the unit meetings, it was decided not to include these for 1957-58 because of the many unfinished business in the current local agenda.

  1. Truancy.

    1. When a student is expelled from school, there should be a follow-up by somebody to see that he goes to another school.

    2. Why are so many juveniles on the streets during school hours -Waikiki, buses, downtown?

  2. Homes for the aged. The low cost housing planned for the aged is not enough. Care is needed.

  3. Weighing of cars.

Why can't automobile manufacturers' statement of weight of specific models be taken instead of insisting that everyone spend hours having cars weighed as soon as they get here.

  4. Board of Water Supply.

    1. Independent agency not covered by the Charter Commission.

    2. Would work in well with the National Item on Resources.

  5. School building set-up under the City and County of Honolulu.
