State Study Item
Committee on Description of the State
In doing our section of the State Study, the committee was particularly impressed with the unique character of Hawaii in geography, people, resources and past political history. We found it necessary to go into all of these phases to understand how we became a state and how our Constitution was written.
We found that the constitutional Convention that wrote our Constitution was created by the Territorial Legislature and it proved worthwhile to read some of their deliberations. Many of the hearings and discussions were quite frank and informal, and the committee became aware that the Constitution is truly the product of our people. True, of course, the final document was worked on by language experts and legal minds, but the ideas all came from a real cross-section of the citizens of Hawaii. The consensus of our committee, at this stage, is that Hawaii has a fine Constitution and any apparent short-comings are probably more a matter of interpretation and implementation. We are all anxious to continue the study of our state government and get into some specific areas of the constitution and really "tear it up."
The State Study group welcomes new members at any time. We feel you would all find it as interesting and applicable to our everyday lives as we have. Section I meets on the morning of the 3rd Thursday of the month at 258 Iliaina Street, Kailua.
