A Leaguer's Report of a "Go-See"
One of the positive programs helping prepare Hawaii to meet its "Crisis in the Cities" is the Head Start program through which four year old boys and girls from culturally deprived homes are exposed' to learning experiences usually present in the middle class home. Emphasis is placed on language arts. needed for effective communication, When the Head Start children enter kindergarten they will be better prepared to participate at the same learning level as the children from the more advantaged homes.
The Head Start Program at Blanche Pope Elementary Sch6oI is in its third year and is a part of the Community Action Program at Waimanalo. The children receive health examinations through the State Public Health Dept. The program is also helped by a social worker. The children are tested and evaluated as they progress to kindergarten and beyond. It has 100% support from the mothers of the children. --
