Report from the Hill
Hawaii Kai residents please save newspapers, tie them in bundles sand take them to Kaiser High School April 27-28. Ask your friends and neighbors to do the same. The American Field Service Club is having this fund drive to raise money to pay for sending Hawaii's students abroad. If this drive is successful it can be a pilot project for other neighborhoods. If enough volume can be collected to make it worthwhile for the paper dealer to bring his container there could be a regular monthly pick-up point in every neighborhood.
Bank of Hawaii is installing a $40,000 pulping machine which chews up 2,000 lbs of waste Paper per hour. It is a closed system; pulp decomposes in 90 days… in the sanilandfill. Machine installed for security reasons. Beats hauling the Papers down to the incinerator by guard.
Sparky Matsunaga writes LWV that he has joined in sponsoring a bill which would provide specific tax deductions for manufacturers utilizing recyclable materials, in amounts equated to the favorable depletion or capital gains treatment now given virgin
materials. It would also provide for amortization of solid waste materials facilities on a 3-year basis. This would give recycling facilities tax treatment similar to that given to other types of pollution control facilities. Sparky also writes that his news releases are printed on recycled paper.
