From Our President - Membership Kick-Off
This year membership is a local, state, and national priority. Honolulu expects to attain its goal of twenty-five new members by November 1st. Over six hundred fliers have been sent to island newcomers and League members inviting them to our membership luncheon, Friday, September 14th at Kahala Hilton from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The morning session will be a sampling of local and state study committees which are in various stages of growth. The new City Council Study chaired by Carla Coray and Claudia Patil began research this summer, and will be going to the membership for the first time in 1980 for consensus.
The committees on Planning, Transportation, and Energy have been stimulating League thought for some time, and LWV positions have been established from which appropriate testimony has been made. These three areas are inter-related in every land use decision. Pam Green, Dee Lum, and Judy Collins chair these committees respectively.
Karla Telfer's school's committee looks at the child within the K-12 educational system, while the Juvenile Justice study headed by Dorothy Bremner focuses on the treatment of the child in the Family Court system. Our luncheon speaker, Dr. Jane Waldron, will address her remarks to "The Psychology of the Juvenile Delinquent."
All of these study committees are excellent and there are more: Impact of Federal Funds on the City and County of Honolulu, Citizen Participation, International Trade, and Costal Zone Management. If you've not had the opportunity to attend a study committee, this is your chance to sample several in just one morning:
