Initiative Process Conference

A conference on the initiative process will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 23 in the State Capitol Auditorium. It is open to the public.

Sponsoring this "Forum on Initiative" is the State Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Clayton Hee, Chairman, in conjunction with the American Association of University Women, Common Cause Hawaii, the Initiative Committee Hawaii and the League of Women Voters of Hawaii. Sen. Mary Jane McMurdo is the Judiciary Committee's chairman of its Select Committee on Initiative.

Keynote speaker at the meeting will be Dr. Jon Van Dyke, Professor of Political Science, University of Hawaii. He will discuss the history of initiative in Hawaii. Some of the initiative efforts that have been held in Hawaii will be the topic of a panel made up of Sen. McMurdo (Date/Laau), Kauai County Councilmember Jo Ann Yukimura (Nukolii), Dr. Frances Delany (Fort DeRussy), Phil Esterman (Sandy Beach), Jack Davis (Flouride Referendum), and Norman Lewis (Hawaii County Taxpayers Association). UH Professor Ted Becker will moderate the discussion.

Also speaking on "Land Use and Zoning--Working Both Sides of the Street" will be local attorney Martin Wolff.
