Rail Transit

Forty League members who attended the annual meeting on Saturday, April 14 unanimously voted to study and reach consensus on the proposed rail transit system for Honolulu.

Early this month all League members were mailed a pro/con study of rail transit made by the Rail Transit task force.

The program for the annual meeting was planned as a pro/con presentation of rail transit in Honolulu. Unfortunately we were unable to obtain a speaker from the City, the State, the University, or the Mass Transit Coalition to speak for rail. We did, however, spend an interesting and informative 90 minutes listening to the alternatives to rail transit as presented by Robert Behnke, president of Aegis Transportation Information Systems, Inc., and to the practical concerns of George Mason, publisher and editor of Pacific Business News, who gave a citizen's perspective of the traffic dilemma.

Several members of the community who read of our lack of success in getting anyone to speak for rail in the Advertiser Saturday morning, joined us for our program, as well as several members of the staff of our elected officials.

The consensus meeting will be held on the 3rd week of May. The time, date, place and consensus questions will be published in the May Aloha Voter or in a special mailing. There is no need to remind all Leaguers of the importance of this issue and the need for a wide representation in attempting to reach consensus.
