Waikiki Master Plan

The P & Z and Transportation Committees will hold a follow-up meeting on Monday, April 30 at 12:30 p.m. at the League office. Joe Magaldi and Tony DePaul of the City Transportation Department have accepted our invitation to speak for rail. Also on the program will be Cliff Slater, Chair of Small Business Hawaii Transportation Committee. All League members are encouraged to attend this meeting and pose some hard questions you would like answered before reaching consensus on the proposed rail system.

15 League members were treated to the unveiling of a proposed longrange master plan for Waikiki by K. Tim Yee of the Queen Emma Foundation at a luncheon meeting on April 12.

The Foundation brought top planners and architects together to develop a conceptual master plan defining a planning and improvement process for the long-term future of Waikiki. The plan is a bold one, introducing a unique theme for Waikiki encompassing the marriage of open space, water, greenery and the pedestrian experience through a network of promenades.

Workshop participants urged that the next year be devoted to the preparation of a comprehensive plan which reestablishes the character of Waikiki as an urban, tropical, Polynesian, American resort. Queen Emma Foundation has asked the Legislature and the Waikiki Convention Center Authority to delay a decision on the Convention Center for at least a year to make this happen.

Copies of the Waikiki Master Plan Workshop, Executive Summary, November, 1989 and the Waikiki Sketchbook are available in the League's lending library for any Leaguer who is interested, as well as the video presentation of the Queen Emma Plan to the City Council.
