Waikiki Tomorrow

The Waikiki Convention Center Authority unanimously chose Herbert Horita as the developer for the International Market Place convention center project at their meeting on June 5. Several special interest group lobbyists spoke in favor of this action. 30 Leaguers led by Vice-President Duke Bainum marched from our office to the State Capitol in protest against this decision. Our signs spoke loudly for us.

In theory, selecting a developer is a step toward negotiations between the Authority and the Developer on what the structure would be. The current plan consists of 50 acres of building on a 5.2 acre site! Is this process going to protect the public interest? We don't think so.

WE WILL HOLD A BROWN BAG RALLY ON SATURDAY, JULY 14, AT THE BANDSTAND IN KAPIOLANI PARK FROM 9:30AM TO 2:00PM TO PROTEST AGAINST THIS "MASSIVE MONSTER" THAT COULD BE THE RUIN OF WAIKIKI. THE RALLY WILL BEGIN WITH A MARCH DOWN WAIKIKI AT 10:00AM, RETURNING TO THE BANDSTAND BY 11:30. MUSIC AND SPEECHES WILL BEGIN AT NOON WITH AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION WELCOME.
