Letter from Neil Abercrombie on HR 2707
Dear Ms. Ellis:
Knowing of your interest in issues of particular concern to women, I'm sure you are as disappointed as I am by the House of Representatives' action on November 19 to sustain the President's veto of HR 2707, funding for the Departments of Labor And Health & Human Services. This bill contained a provision to neutralize the gag rule which prohibits federally supported clinics from dispensing medical advice on abortion. The vote was 276-156 in favor of overriding the veto, falling just 12 votes short of the required two-thirds needed.
While abortion opponents won this round, the fight to overturn the gag rule will not end. The Energy and Commerce Committee has approved Title X Reauthorizaton legislation that would overturn the gag rule and require family planning clinics to provide pregnant women with full information, including information about abortion. This bill is ready to come to the House floor for a vote.
You can be assured that I remain firmly committed to seeing that women are fully protected under the law, and that reproductive choice is available to ALL women, not only those with the ability to see a private physician.
As always, please feel free to contact me whenever I can be of assistance to you.
