Viewpoint for the Week of July 26, 1993

The U.S. House of Representatives on June 30, voted in support of the Hyde Amendment to ban medicaid abortion funding for low-income women, except to save the life of the woman or in the case of rape or incest -- a clear violation of the fundamental right to privacy in reproductive choice.

This attack on medicaid funding for abortion appears to be a critical part of an overall strategy by anti-abortion forces to make abortion illegal for all, everywhere. Poor women should have the same access to reproductive services as all women. The right to health care services should not be reserved for those who can afford it.

We must band together to stop anti-choice forces from further eroding the right of all American women to freedom of choice. We must fight for this right again and again. We must ensure that the right to reproductive choice is a right with real legal protections, a right for all American women, regardless of income.

We urge the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee to reject this blatantly discriminatory Hyde Amendment as a violation of a woman's constitutionally guaranteed right to choose and we urge the Congress to work for a speedy passage of the Freedom of Choice Act.
