Oahu Silver Legislature

The Second Annual Silver Legislature convenes on December 1, at the State Office Tower on 235 So. Beretania Street and will continue through December 3. A program for leadership and citizen participation for senior adults, this mock legislative session is designed to offer a lively, stimulating, "hands-on" experience in the government process. The roles assumed by the participants can be that of legislator, lobbyist or observer.

Though described as a "mock" legislative session, the issues are real and pertinent. Resolutions and Bills under the umbrella of Human Services, Health and Housing; Judiciary and Consumer Protection; Labor, Education and Transportation are introduced, discussed and acted upon. Bills and Resolutions relating to: Assisted Suicide; Long-term Care Financing program; Initiative, Referendum and Recall; Ethics and Conflict of Interest;

Campaign Finance Reform; Employee's Retirement System; and Transportation Alternatives to Rail are among the 22 issues that will be addressed in the Silver Legislature.

Those Bills and Resolutions that pass the test of legislative scrutiny will be submitted to the 1994 Legislature for consideration in January.

Cable TV Channel 26 or Chronicle Channel 3 will feature an hour-long program on November 16 at 7:30 p.m., repeated on November 20 at 1:00 p.m. on "Oahu Silver Legislature: Your Chance for Legislative Action." The same Channels will present "Important Legislative Issues" at 7:30 p.m. on November 23, repeated on Nov. 27 at 1:30 p.m. An orientation session will be held on November 22 between 9:00 a.m. to noon at the State Office Tower, Room 1111.
