Hawaii Lawyers Care Receives Grant

Americorps, a new federal program dubbed the domestic Peace Corps, which gives young people an opportunity to develop civic responsibility by performing community service has just awarded a $3 10,000 grant to Hawaii. The only Hawaii submittal to survive a national competitive process, this grant will be administered by Hawaii Lawyers Care and its executive director, Judy Sobin.

The specific needs to be met include legal assistance, greater awareness about domestic violence and the resources to help victims. the need for legal assistance has been identified as on of the most important gaps that need to be filled in protecting victims from repeated domestic violence. In seeking restraining orders, women encounter procedural problems and attitudinal barriers; these problems could be eliminated if advocates were made available.

Forty half-time participants will be recruited to include 10 lawyers, 15 law students and 15 other students. The proposed program seeks to provide safety to victims in Hawaii by helping them obtain court orders to keep batterers away. Lawyers and student advocates will help victims file for protective orders. They will also help with divorce, child custody and child support issues.

For more information about participating in this rewarding and exciting public service, contact Judy Sobin at Hawaii Lawyers Care, 528-7047.
