Vocational Education, Charter Schools on Agenda
The Education committee had a lively meeting with new Board of Education member John Compton on Feb. 8. Both John and Keith Sakata have impressed us with their commitment to improving education and their intelligent approach to the complex problems plaguing schools.
We discussed bills presently in the legislature, especially SB 1869 for "Charter Schools." We could not determine whether this bill addresses schools outside and independent of the bureaucracy or whether it is meant to guide schools that want to transform themselves into "charter schools" within the DOE. Since this bill seems to be flawed, it will not be reported out this session. Prior to the next legislative session, League plans to hold an information forum about charter schools, and invite Ted Kolderie of Minnesota's Center for Policy Studies to participate.
The group decided it wanted to move next toward "TechPrep" which is opportunities for students in high school to have choices for vocational/academic classes at the community colleges. We will invite Dr. Joyce Tsunoda, Community Colleges Chancellor, and others associated with vocational education to its March meeting. The committee is interested in suggestions from the Kauai, Hilo, and Kona leagues as we move into this new area.
The March meeting will be held on Wed., Mar. 8, at 4:00 p.m. at 3596 Woodlawn Drive, subject to the availability of our resource people. Please check with the League office or Marion Saunders 988-2635 for any changes.
