Update: Hawaii County Charter Commission

The Hawaii County Charter Commission has reached the final stages of its work. Nineteen proposed charter amendments will be presented to the Hawaii County Council on May 7th. Some are revisions of existing amendments. Others are new to the charter.

The Council has several options. They can 1) accept all nineteen as written or 2) propose alternative wording to any of the Commission’s amendments. Any alternative wording goes back for the Commission’s consideration on May 21.

At that point, the Charter Commission may change their original wording to incorporate the Council’s points. If they do not, the Council may place their own proposals on the ballot, alongside the Commission’s. At any time before the deadline for 2010 general election ballot language, the Council may place any additional amendment - not one proposed by the Commission - on the ballot.

To follow the amendments, go to the Charter Commission website: Under items listed for April 9, click on comm.251 Report to the County Council. This gives a good overview of the nineteen amendments to be presented to the council on May 7.
