Education Committee

The Education Committee sent a survey to all Board of Education candidates in late August. All but two of the candidates returned replies, and edited versions of responses to six of the questions were published by The Honolulu Star Bulletin in October.

On October 10, the Committee co-sponsored a Forum for Board of Education candidates with the Social Justice Council of the First Unitarian Church of Honolulu. The Forum, held at the church, was conducted by the Education Committee Chair and videotaped by 'Olelo. All but two of the BOE candidates participated. 'Olelo showed the tape five times subsequently.

The Committee has decided to concentrate on seeking greater autonomy for charter schools in the forthcoming legislative session, and we will be preparing and distributing a position paper on the matter before the opening of the session.

Mary Anne Raywid
Chair, Education Committee
