Con-Con-Con for Hawaii County

The Big Island hosted a Constitutional Convention Conference on March 22-23rd, thanks to the initiative and hard work of their Citizens Committee on Constitutional Convention. General Chairman of that group is Robert Bean, and Vice-Chairman and Secretary is Hawaii County Leaguer Trudi Zelko (in-coming President).

The meetings, held at the Nalei and Orchid Isle Hotels drew a good representation of Island citizenry, including a number of avowed and potential candidates for Constitutional Convention. Lt. Gov. Thomas Gill and University President Thomas Hamilton addressed luncheon meetings, and the Conference was opened by County Chairman Shunichi Kimura. Big Island and Honolulu resource people led lively discussions on education, ethics, bill of rights, power of executive, judiciary, and structure of the Legislature. One of the most interesting panels was made up of seven alert Hilo High School students who debated whether the voting age should be lowered.

Participating in panels of this important project were Hilo Leaguers Molly Zimring, Helene Hale, and Mary George from Honolulu LWV. Many other Hilo Leaguers contributed to the success of the Conference. A very worthy project... this Committee anticipates continued public education.
