Senate Passes Home Rule Bill Overwhelmingly

By a vote of 64 to 8 the Senate passed legislation on October 12 which would give the District of Columbia self-government. The only limitations on the authority of the city government under the adopted plan are denial of the power to impose a commuter income tax and the possibility of veto of legislation passed by the city council by an act of either House of Congress within 30 days. Senators Fong and Inouye both voted yes. Sen. Inouye serves on the. D.C. Committee for the Senate. Now it's up to the House, starting with the House District Committee.
