Our committee has been active in a variety of areas. First, we testified at Legislative hearings and Hawaii Co. public meetings on different bills and resolutions. No bills we opposed were passed! Before testifying in favor of HR 209, which directs DSSH to establish a vocational training center at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility, Marti McGurk and Marion Saunders met with DSSH deputy director Alfred Suga. As a result of this meeting, Marion gave joint testimony with DSSH Franklin Sunn before the House Committee on Corrections and Rehabilitation, which passed the resolution. Now League will work with DSSH and DOE to implement this measure.
Marti also met with Judge Betty Vitousek and is writing a booklet which would explain and describe the Family
the Court and their families. This book-let will also be used by LWV resource per-sons in 8th grade classes. Alice Larkin, JJ chair on Kauai, will be of great assistance on this project. She currently serves as a volunteer case aide for Family Court there and one of her tasks is to introduce the juvenile offender to the court system.
Last, Debbie Ellrich, Ruth Dias and I attended a two-day conference, May 21-22, which focused on the problems of teenage women. Report and literature from the conference are in LWV Honolulu office.
