Leaguer Receives Award

This summer League member Patty May received a national honor -- the Sue Kingsley Volunteer Memorial Award. Awarded annually to the gun-control activist "who best exemplifies extraordinary diligence and dedication to the cause of reducing handgun violence," the award was presented by Handgun Control Inc., a Washington-based gun control lobby group. The award is named after a California activist, now deceased.

As reported in the local newspapers, May helped lead gun-control efforts in our state following the death of her son killed by a teenage neighbor playing with his father's rifle. May helped with the passage of a state ban on assault pistols and with the defeat of efforts to loosen Hawaii's limit on large-capacity ammunition magazines.

A League member for over a year, Patty May has been active in monitoring last year's elections and in lobbying for gun control. She is co-chair of the Hawaii Firearms Control Coalition and Parents of Murdered Children and is local chapter president of Gun Responsibility in Every Family. League is proud to have this community citizen and active member.
