Education Committee MeetingDr. Allen Awaya was the featured speaker at the March 14 meeting of the State Education Committee. He informed us about his program for gifted students at Kahuku High School, a choice program open to all students, as distinguished from gifted student programs which preselect participating students. There are now 500 students in the program and all are doing well. The school is known as a tough, academic school and class size averages 32. According to Awaya, students rise to the expectations of the program. They must have a 3.0 grade point in all subjects and good attendance. Students are involved in all aspects of program-running activities, screening, grade checks, counseling, etc. Average students do exceedingly well in higher education. He emphasized there must be agreement on goals and the program must include parents.
