The League of Women Voters is pleased to support H.B. 1522. No Child Left Behind has placed enormous emphasis on reading and mathematics, and there is now a growing stress on science and technology; but meanwhile, recent figures show that Hawaii has the lowest voting incidence in the nation. We believe that civic education is enormously important. We are pleased to see this bill giving it some attention. We are also pleased to see H.B. 1522 providing resources and leaving it up to schools to decide what they want to do, rather than mandating a program. There is much evidence to show that this is the way to get the strongest and most successful programs. We hope this bill passes. We find it deserving of wide support.
