Chairman Hee, Vice Chair Maile S.L. Shimabukuro and Committee Members: The League of Women Voters of Hawaii supports HB2174 HD1, which is intended to allow public access to information about spending on political election campaigns by broadening the definition of entities whose campaign spending is monitored by the Campaign Spending Commission, and giving the Commission new and clearer responsibilities for collecting informaton and making this information available to the public . The League believes that an effective democracy is based on the involvement of informed citizens in political decisions – especially, of course, in elections. HB2174 HD1 will greatly improve the access of the public to information about the source of election funding, enabling citizens to judge for themselves the trustworthiness of information in campaign related materials.
