League Member Honored

EVELYN BENDER former League State President, along with Electra Anderson of Common Cause, Marguarite Peach of AAUW and Rev. Robert Fraser of the former Council of Churches were honored by both houses of the Legislature on March 2, 2000 on the 10th Anniversary of the Public Access Room. The untiring efforts of this group, facing many difficulties, were able to prevail on the Legislature of that time to create this most important tool for the public to understand and have input into the legislative process.

Hawaii has long been recognized as one of the nation's leaders in the open government movement. The fruits of the labor of many people are all around us: The Public Access Room, the Legislative Broadcast Project, websites for the Legislature, Legislative Reference Bureau (preceded by the ACCESS Computer System); the Office of Information Practices; the State Ethics Commission; the Auditor's Office; the Campaign Spending Commission; the Ombudsman's Office; TV shows "Call the Capitol" and "Capitol Commentary"; the Citizen's Guide; Audio Access; and the Sunshine Law.
