Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act

A REQUEST FOR ACTION coming from Mrs. John G. Lee, our National President, is concerned with the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act. Since 1934 this Trade Agreements Program has been the cornerstone of U.S. foreign economic policy. The need for action is urgent, because the Act expires June 12, 1951.

On February 7, 1951 the House voted to extend the Trade Agreements Program for three years but added four amendments which would in effect limit the authority of the U.S. government to enter into trade agreements with other nations. These amendments, by drastically reducing the effectiveness of the program, would have alarming repercussions on the international economic system built up since World War II.

The immediate need is for Leaguers to write to the members of the Senate Finance Committee or to all Senators. The committee members are Chairman, Walter F. George (Ga.), Tom Connally (Tex.), Harry Byrd (Va.), Edwin C. Johnson (Colo.), Clyde R. Hoey (N.C.), Robert S. Kerr (Okla.), J. Allen Freer, Jr. (Del.), Eugene D. Millikin (Colo.), Robert A. Taft (Ohio), Hugh Butler (Neb.), Owen Brewster (Me.), Edward Martin (Pa.), John J. Williams (Del.).

The League's position is to support extension of the Act as first introduced in the House, that is without the four amendments added on the floor of the House. Interested Leaguers may contact our local president, Mrs. Ralph S. Myers (947045) for further information.
