Voter Service

What is more exciting than an election year? Why, an election year when you are a deputized registrar of voters, of course! And it is possible for you to become one. The office of the County Clerk is offering training sessions both daytime and evening - one 1½ hour session is all that it takes. In January Sharon Yokote, Barbara Jacobson, Judy Kubota, Betty Piper worked at U.H. during the Interim Session with other community groups. Together they registered 1,700 new voters! Maury Muench went to Hawaii Loa College where the response was so good that she is going back again. These Leaguers worked as volunteers, but there is a good chance that you could be paid for your work as a registrar A pleasant way to earn a little money for yourself, or to donate to the League (we need money.) Call Claudia Patil 254-3741 for further details.

WELL DONE!

Once again you proved it! League members are fantastic when it comes to responding to a community request for assistance.

Two days before the teachers were scheduled to meet at the HIC to consider a strike vote the Union contacted. the League for assistance. Our reputation for non-partisanship and our expertise in poll watching stood us in good stead. 31 members worked from 6 PM to 3 AM supervising balloting, counting heads on motions on the floor, checking validating procedures and counting the ballots.

Those who took part reported their satisfaction in contributing directly to the solution of a vital public issue and in bringing the League to the attention of thousands of strategically placed persons in the community, i.e. teachers.

The "feedback" has been tremendous. We have received a number of letters thanking us, some signed by every teacher in the school, some from various District Union organizations, and the following letter from the head office of the HSTA:

"Dear Ladies: Oh behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff at HSTA, I wish to thank you for the outstanding service you provided the teachers of Hawaii in handling the secret ballot election on the strike vote held on January 31, 1972. Your volunteering to serve as impartial observers, even at the last moment, was very much appreciated and was a great relief, I am sure, to all the teachers in the State, as well as to certain people in our community because of your past good work.

The many hours that you were required to stand by on post in counting heads on the various motions, in passing out the ballots and in counting the ballots insured impartiality which cannot be questioned. Mahalo, Aloha and Best Wishes

Yours very truly, /s/ Al Hamel., Executive Secretary"

Now we are "gearing up" to handle the contract ratification balloting. Hopefully this will be history by the time you receive your bulletin, but we are presently conferring with the Union on validating and balloting procedures when a contract resulting from the bargaining is finally presented for teacher ratification.

Would you like to be part of the team? We would be glad to have you - call Claudia Patil (254-3471).
