Charter Amendments

The Honolulu City Council is considering placing 16 Charter amendments proposals on the ballot. The LWV of Honolulu sent a statement to the Council for the public hearing Sept. 11. The gist of it follows:

The League of Women Voters has been looking at Honolulu's govern mental structure for 20 years or more. Our members have concluded that the current distribution of authority between the executive and legislative branches is desirable. Some of the proposed amendments would change this balance. Piecemeal changes do not lend themselves to public understanding. Vie question the timeliness of a proposal for a Charter Commission since the State Constitutional convention question will be on the ballot this fall. It would not be desirable to have a Charter Commission and a Con-Con meeting at the same time.

The decision on placing the proposed amendments on the ballot is on the Council's agenda for Sept. 15.
