The Rosalie Goodman Internship Program

The LWVUS Education Fund announced the second Rosalie Goodman internship program made possible by a generous bequest from long time League leader Rosalie Goodman.

The goal of the program is to increase the effectiveness of seasoned and new League leaders in their communities. The internship provides opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge of the American political process from the Washington perspective as well as knowledge of how the League and other public interest groups make an impact on public policy.

Two League leaders will be chosen to participate in a month-long internship in Washington, DC and have an opportunity to be involved in the dynamics of the Washington scene, with a special focus on issues of major concern to the League. Visits with members of Congress and working with members of the LWVUS Lobby Corps are planned as part of the program. The interns will learn about aspects of the League's national office that are of special interest to them (e.g., fundraising, membership, or a specially designed project). Interns will observe a meeting of the national board and its committees.

The internship will begin on Monday, October 2, and be completed on Friday, October 27, 1989. Applications must be received at the national office by August 1 and the names of the interns will be announced on September 1.

Each intern will receive a stipend to cover basic living expenses and round-trip transportation costs to Washington, DC.

The LWVEF will help locate suitable housing if needed.

To be selected as an intern, candidates must satisfy the following criteria. All League members are eligible including those who applied for the 1987 intern program.

  1. Be a League leader.

  2. Demonstrate leadership qualities in areas of advocacy, education, organization (such as membership outreach, fundraising, etc.).

  3. Be a self starter, able to function in an unstructured environment.

  4. Present evidence of a plan to take back to the local community the skills learned during the Washington experience.

  5. Participate for the full term of the internship.

If interested, call the League office, 531-7448, for an application form. All applications must be signed by the State or Local League president.
