Chapter Reports - Honolulu

Honolulu's goal for the year has been to improve operation of the League office, tighten control of membership enrollment, continue citizen patrol of government, and improve contact with members, offering increased opportunities for participation in League activities.

There has been repeated formal expression of our opposition to rail system proposals for Oahu. We have attended City Charter Commission meetings to remind commissioners of the requirements of the "Sunshine" laws. We assisted first-time candidates in the Fall elections for their appearance on "Candidates in Focus." We have tried to press for affordable housing, and a reactivated Women's Health and Safety Committee is tackling drug abuse as a health problem.

Under the direction of Arlene Ellis, elections were conducted for the National American Indian Housing Coalition, the Plumbers and Fitters Union, Ho'oponopono (the blind vendors), and Molokai Enterprise Community.

At our annual meeting in April, Laura E. Thielen, Chairperson of Partners In Care, spoke on the homeless crisis in Honolulu.

The Honolulu Board for 2007-08 includes:

President: Piilani Kaopuiki

Vice-President: Sue Miller

Secretary: Robin Loomis

Treasurer: Randy Ching

Directors: Charles Carole, Arlene Ellis, Pearl Johnson, Teresa Lau, Suzanne Meisenzahl, Jackie Parnell, Elizabeth Reilly.

Piilani Kaopuiki
