League of Women Voters of Hawaii Goals and Objectives

  1. Increase public participation in government
    1. Increase voter registration and turnout
      1. Distribute voter registration forms with drivers’ licenses
      2. Expand “get-out-the-vote” campaigns: PSAs, Poster contests for high school students with prizes
    2. Investigate ways to increase voter awareness & knowledge of important issues
    3. Support and study government behavior and process
    4. Use technology to bring government to the public
      1. Eliminate need for password on web site
      2. Put community calendar on web site
      3. Put testimony on web site
      4. Increase number of hyperlinks on web site
    5. Support initiative and referendum at the state level
    6. Increase cooperation with other organizations with similar goals (Media Council, Sierra Club, etc.)
    7. Increase use of national and local education funds, other grants
  2. Increase League Membership
    1. Recruit newly retired – work with company counseling
    2. Contact new arrivals – LWV welcome wagon
    3. Be visible! 
      1. Work on magnet issues 
      2. Be known as relevant and effective
      3. Present testimony
      4. Write letters to the editor, op-ed pieces
    4. Create junior arm of League
    5. Reach students through speakers on issues; invite them to participate in action
    6. Have active Membership Chairs in each League
    7. Increase diversity, e.g. recruit men, different age groups
  3. Plan for Future Leadership
    1. Develop succession plans for each League
    2. Make sure each committee has at least three members
    3. Make sure there is a dedicated chair for any new study
