New Education PositionAfter two years of study, the League has formally adopted the following position:
The Principle of Choice emphasizes the essential role of teachers, parents, and students in decision making and planning within a school. It calls for those who are associated with a school, or a program, to be associated by choice, not assignment. A corollary of the choice principle is that each school have the autonomy necessary to carry out its program and to make the decisions affecting its functioning, including decisions regarding finances, personnel, and curriculum. Within the parameters logical to a school's functioning, the Principle of Choice permits teachers and students to take advantage of the full range of educational options.
