Legislative Action '88

A significant portion of the October Board meeting was devoted to discussing ways to make the League effective and visible at the Legislature. The areas that the League will cover during the upcoming session are as follows: Water, CZM, and Solid Waste; Juvenile Justice; Education; Election Laws; Citizen Rights; Meeting Basic Human Needs; Sunshine; H-Power and Air; and Reapportionment and Constitutional Amendments. (For a list of the Action Chairs for these area, see LEGISLATIVE HELP WANTED! below.)

In addition to following and testifying on bills as they come up, we will be doing two things that we have not done before. First, we will be sending a letter to the legislators just before the session opens, stating our positions in brief and listing the League members who are following specific areas. Second, the Board will send all members two or three Action Alerts before the session opens on issues confronting the '88 Legislature. Like National Action Alerts, these will ask members to write and/or call legislators on specific issues and will spell out our particular concerns.
