Shelter Aid: Help for Abused Spouses

The LWV/US is encouraging League members to support a unique program called Shelter Aid, a cooperative endeavor of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) and nine popular brands of Johnson & Johnson products.

In addition to helping fund shelters for abused women and their children, Shelter Aid has established a national tollfree domestic violence hotline, 1-800-333-SAFE (333-7233). The hotline, which is staffed 24 hours a day, responds to requests for information and shelter referrals and will provide discussion of the options available to abused spouses.

The NCADV is asking individuals to contact the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee (of which Sen. Spark Matsunaga is a member) and urging them to keep the authorization level for P.L. 98-457 (Family Violence Prevention and Services Act)--at $26 million when it is renewed this year.

For more information on Shelter Aid and relevant legislation, call Tisha Hickson at 395-5451.
