LWV of Kauai Wins Award

Representative Patsy Mink accepts the American Disabilities Association Award on behalf of the Kauai League of Women Voters. The award was presented by James E. Oesterreicher, (right) chair and CEO of J C. Penney. Also present was Alan A. Reich, (left) president of the National Organization on Disability.

League of Women Voters of Kauai has won the 1997 National Organizations Partnership Program award for outstanding work responding to the needs of persons living with disabilities. At the first Plenary Session of the LWVUS Council on June 7 in Washington D.C., Representative Patsy Mink accepted the American Disabilities Association Award for the Kauai League. The award was given by James E. Oesterreicher, chair and CEO of J.C. Penney. Also present was Alan A. Reich, president of the National Organization on Disability.

The first place $1000 award was shared with LWV of Tarrant County (Dallas-Fort Worth area), Texas. Both leagues organized projects with outreach to persons with disabilities. LWV of Kauai's October 10, 1996 "Power the Vote Town Meeting" promoted and rendered special outreach to persons with disabilities by offering sign language interpretation and staging the meeting at an accessible location. Prior to the election, an open-captioned video program of the town meeting shown on Ho'ike Community TV provided hearing-impaired citizens an opportunity to receive information about the topics.

The Kauai League's most recent outreach to persons with disabilities is to open-caption its video of its annual meeting, "Civil Liberties and the Internet," for presentation on local cable access TV.

Representative Mink and Alan A. Reich enjoy a light moment at Council `97.
