The League of Women Voters strongly supports HCR 275 which urges the President of the United States to use diplomacy to resolve the nuclear proliferation issue with Iran. It urges addressing this issue together with our allies and friends, and that military action be used only as a last resort and only to protect our domestic territory.

We believe that the President and Congress should know how the country feels on this issue. The rhetoric the issue is provoking has to be toned down lest we paint ourselves into a corner where if we don’t attack, we’re cowardly bluffers, and if we do attack, we may be unharnessing more problems than we can handle.

The rest of the world will only work with us to the extent that we are willing to work with them. If any cause is worthwhile and certain action necessary, that should be evident to our allies. The United States cannot afford to be the lone policeman of the world, at least not in today’s world.

Let’s hope that similar resolutions are being sent by the rest of the states. Thank you.
