From the President's ChairAs was reported in the May bulletin, the League Board voted to request Governor Quinn to veto the charter if it was passed amended. Since it was adopted with two amendments, a letter was consequently sent. This letter pointed out that the League is in favor of a new charter and was, in fact, the first organization to promote enabling legislation. The League feels, however, that the action of the legislature in over—riding the people's vote cannot be condoned; such organizations as the League have an obligation to uphold the basic democratic principle that government must be responsive to the will of the people. Amendments now, moreover, set a precedent for legislators to make further changes in the future. Opal Sloane |
